Let me put out a disclaimer first that I don’t deny that the Job Aid legislation is important, but how we pay for it I have an issue with. Also don’t know who came up with the idea, but bottomline is that all parties signed this thing!
The attached article appeared in this mornings News Journal, and as I read I thought saving these jobs is important as many are Police officers, firefighters, teachers, and other necessary jobs. What I found in basically small print at the end of the reading was how we are going to pay for it, “Among the pay-fors chosen by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., was a $12 billion cut to food stamps that would cost a family of four $59 a month beginning in early 2014” Now being involved in Education, I see the critical need to keep our teachers, but let me explain the new issue Washington has not considered.
Food stamps for all its flaws is there to help feed the children, and those of us in Delaware know how many children the state has on free and reduced lunches. Well now we are taking food away from children who are already struggling and if you dig into the numbers these same children are the ones struggling to make grade in the cells of NCLB. So now we have made it harder for these children to learn and make AYP along with the school districts they attend, and possibly added to failing schools. This then in Delaware creates a situation with a new law on the books that says teachers have to show two years of student growth to be effective and keep their jobs.
Let me turn on the light bulb, Washington has taken and stressed children who are already struggling, and now most likely will have trouble with Student growth. This then in Delaware leads to teachers not making it to an effective rating, so all those teachers whose jobs we saved are now being let go because the system says they failed the children. When in all reality those folks in Washington have again failed the children by not looking at the whole picture or child!
