Sorry it’s been a while since I had time to sit down long enough to type up what’s been happening around the district and state in education. The April 26th board meeting began with recognizing student accomplishments, and the board got a lesson in Parliamentary procedures from the winning FFA team. After approving change orders for the Central Academy minus one for athletic equipment and new sound system for cafeteria, we finalized the orders for the academy furniture. All change orders for the upper elementary were tabled until the May 3rd meeting, but we approved the HVAC renovations for the Morris school which would update an out dated system to improve climate control.
The Milford Parent Advisory Council presented to the board on its purpose, and mission. The MPAC group initiated by the Superintendent was setup to offer the board help in reaching more parents and better parental involvement in student success. The group also works to help lobby the folks in Dover to help the legislators understand the needs of the Milford community. After the excellent presentation, the board was given an update on the MSD Dress code which was given additional corrective actions for next school year. First, to eliminate subjectiveness with staff only the principal or designee is responsible for determining if clothing meets this policy. Teachers who believe clothing may be in violation will send the student to the principal with a note explaining what the violations is, and thereby freeing teachers from being “police”. The actual policy is not far from the current policy, but does exclude clothing with holes above the knee, and no tops that reveal cleavage. Finally, the policy when finalized and distributed to students will contain the corrective actions for violations.
After the personnel report was approved, the board reviewed the financial reports which were approved along with the Districts Financial Reports. The meeting wrapped up with approval of several policy updates which can be seen on the district web pages.
One week later on May 3rd the board met in a special open session to review the tabled change orders for the upper elementary with the construction teams. The change orders for upgrades to the roof, and credits for cancelled work were approved. The remaining meeting time was used to clarify and upgrade many board policies that needed to be corrected for the changes made to the job descriptions for the two director’s positions dealing with curriculum and student affairs. The board adjourned to executive session to discuss district demographics with U of D as relates to new elementary school boundaries. Also talked about plans to attend May 4th LEA meeting in NC for RTTT planning. Will post info from that RTTT meeting later.
