Quick Update

Kind of been out of touch as work has been more demanding as of late, and I’m working now on a presentation for work that will be in front of a group in Shanghi, China. As to board posts, the board has narrowed the search for the new superintendent down, and the interviews are proceeding. Plans are to finish first round of interviews this week and then look at visiting the current districts of those finalist. Still on time line to have a new superintendent announced by May. Will post more as time and information becomes available.

Gary, how active are your district parents in the superintendent selection process? Will they get an opportunity to weigh in one the finalists?

I was reading a blog post on fixRedClay.com referencing board members with blogs and as far as I know, you are the only board member in Delaware with a blog. It also dawn on me that when I deleting my blog last April and brought it back on line I forgot to add a link to your blog on my blog list. Has been corrected.

FixRedClay.com has become the educational townhall blog for Red Clay run by two Red Clay parents who gives countless hours in their children’s school. Kim. one of the Fix Red Clay team threw her hat into the school board race which is good news for all of us. We have another parent competing for the other open seat and he is a parent of a special needs student. It’s been a long time since we actually had board members with children in school.

Good luck with the Shanghi project.

      Kilroy,
On the search we actually started out by asking the community what they were looking for and what was important in a superintendent. We used those reponses to develop the questions that were used in the first round of interviews, but for legal reasons only the board was present during the interviews. On the next round of finalist interviews the teachers, union leaders, and administrators will have a chance to interview the finalist as they are given a “tour” of the district. Personally, one of the questions I felt was important was how they felt the new superintendent should get to know the district, and I was looking for someone who thought the community stakeholders and students were first on the list! I understand the Red Clay district has found its new superintendent.
As for being the only board blogger lets hope the two from Red Clay continue theirs as I think its important the board members don’t lose touch with who put them there. What is the key word for the future of Delaware education? Transparency!
      Thanks for adding me back.

Rumor mills are all we community memebers have to go on and inidcations are there were three that applied in which one was for Merv as no secret. I understand the selection process as not to expose all candiates fearing it could negatively impact their current job. Red Clay did the Q & A for the public online so I am sure those concerns with be part of the process. I openly support Merv!

FixRedClay is two moms and that blog isn’t going anywhere. I never had problems picking up the phone and calling our board members but one has to be assertive. Board members won’t respond to question on the blog because most people keep their ID a secret so a board member would be a goldfish piranha tank. However, the local blogs that do focus on education in Red Clay are monitored by the district and they district does find the information useful. Especially when there is a sincere relevant consensus.

What is the key word for the future of Delaware education? Transparency!

That’s the truth! Obama seems big on it! Markell’s flexible spending of state funds by the district is calling for online checkbook ledgers. So I think that’s the warning shot as what’s to come.

    “Thanks for adding me back.”
No problem! check out FixRedClay.com and consider adding them to your blog roll! Maybe they will inspire some parents down your way to do the same! Many of the problems are common as they really relate to communication.
