Superintendent Search Update

Monday night the board met to review the latest results from the survey and focus groups to see where we are going with the search. First, The survey had 720 hits and 455 individuals competed the entire survey. The results showed ~76% of the respondents lived in the Milford district, ~60 % were parents or guardians of students in the district. The respondents also answered that ~70 did not graduate from Milford, and actually ~67% attended school in another state or district.
Some interesting results from the survey were that the respondents thought Quality teachers and staff, progressive leadership, and use of technolgy were important factors for a superintendent to be concerned with. Personal skills that showed as important in the survey were Leadership, Communication, Public Relations, and Instructional skills. The survey also listed traits the respondents felt were important in the next superintendent are Integrity, Peacemaker, Enthusiasm, and Commitment to the Community. When looking at the experience of the next superintendent the public felt that being a frontline educator, either a principal or teacher, was the most important factor in hiring the new district leader. The other experiences that showed strong were experience with diverse groups, and experience with setting strategic planning goals/ Visions. Along the lines of strategic planning, the survey showed that the public felt that Funding, School Safety, and Recruiting/Retaining high quality teachers were those issues the new superintendent will face in the next five to ten years.
Focus groups from the district buildings showed very similar results to the survey with being both a Leader and a Visionary being high on the list for staff. There will be a focus group of students done shortly, and we will review those results when they are done. In the mean time the board also reviewed the actual packet and announcement that will be sent out to candidates so it could go to the printers this week. The timeline still is moving towards the new superintendent being announced by the end of the 2008-2009 school year.
In other regular business the board reviewed the proposed boundary changes that would allow for continued support of the Milford Boys and Girls club activities. The evening ended with a change of date for the December board meeting to 12/15 because of Holiday activities.
